Having recently lateraled (?) from a v100 to a v50, just thought I’d share with the rest of the v50 folk that there’s a happy medium in the v100. Sure, the money isn’t exactly the same and the work is not the same headline deals, but there’s so much less stress and much lower expectations (both in terms of work quality and availability). I’ll stick this out a bit for the money and to boost my resume, but I’ll be back at the v100 before long.

? It is basically the same thing for less money. WLB and stress has more to do with your luck of the draw on your team than which Amlaw firm you went to; they'd mostly have the same requirements

I totally agree. I’ve done this from a v30 to an AM 150 and the expectations at the am150 was SOO much lower. Way less stress.

Agreed. Also way easier to make partner.

First year trainee here. Having the standard wobbles but generally surviving.

My question is - how can I tell if I'm doing well? More specifically, what common and avoidable mistakes (specific or general) do trainees make, and what attitude or actions impress you?

Recently overheard some associates complaining about another trainee and now I have the fear... I want to get this right. Thanks in advance.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Depending on how many people are there and how it feels, I was planning to stay an hour extra but should I hang around the office until later? First time visiting this city so it’d be great to take in some sights too (although that’s not a priority of course).

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.
