I’ve done both.. but only FLL when the flight + cost of Uber to hotel (round trip) was still cheaper, and the flight times were otherwise comparable/favorable to fly into FLL.
FLL is about 45 minutes north of Miami so it would be a long uber ride in each direction
Add the cost of the Uber and 30 mins additional commute.

30 minutes … without traffic
If you fly to FLL, the process could be smoother. You can take an Uber or take the tri rail to MIA and then an express bus (150) to Miami Beach.
150 is not bad (I take it daily) and the tri-rail is always on time. Those are not routes going into the barrios.
I’ve done both to/from South Beach. It depends on the time of day you arrive or depart. Rush hour will obviously be longer. All else equal I preferred FLL.

Is it best to rent a car if traveling and staying on south beach?
Consider the daily parking rates if you stay at a hotel or resort. Probably cheaper to ride share.
Thanks folks! All super helpful, ended up picking MIA. Next question - any recs for Marriott hotels in the area (ideally under 300/night)?

When in September? Avoid South Beach if it’s during Labor Day Weekend.
Otherwise, check Marriott Stanton South Beach, which should be around that rate.
If you’re lucky, the Edition might be a little over $300/ night
