Hello community!
I'm not currently in management, but have been working my tail off to get there. I have 15 yrs in the industry across multiple lines of insurance (BI, lit, SIU, non-standard, commercial). I've done all the things asked of me, but still, no promo.
My goal is to get into senior leadership.
My question is, are additional certifications, degrees, etc. worth pursuing in the insurance industry?
If so, what have seen to be the most beneficial/return on investment in the industry?

Have you been staying in the same company? Sometimes it just cannot happen where you are; look for a new higher role outside

I don’t think more certifications or degrees are what you need. I might look for opportunities to practice management without being a manager. Are there mentoring programs where you can be a mentor? Are there more junior folks in your department that you can coach through a project? Is there an organization in your community where you could get a leadership role? What about “interviewing” other managers to learn through their experiences?

I would also ask for much more specific feedback.

How many years there have you been pursuing a promotion? Assuming what you say is true, you should look to leave if you care about moving up. Most likely your leadership either cannot promote you or they don’t want or care enough to. Either way, you’re underselling yourself then. There are lots of reasons why this could be happening… HR/the business have a priority to hire externally more than promote internally or your boss wants you to stay in your current role because who else will keep doing her job for her when she takes PTO, etc etc.

When you leadership says ‘just keep doing what you are doing’ it means there is nothing else new you can do to get promoted and they have no plans on promoting you soon. Talk to them, ask for more details and direction. Ask can I expect to be on the next promotion cycle at year end reviews? If you don’t get a clear and confident answer, you should stop investing so much time at your current company and start investing time to find your new role externally.

For a direct answer to your question on certifications: certifications usually mean very little / make a very small impact for senior leaders. It’s a nice to have, rarely a need to have. BUT ask your leadership. You have nothing to lose by asking, should I prioritize getting more certifications? Will these certifications help me solidify getting a promotion this year? My two cents: if your leadership is not telling you to get a certification, then you don’t need it girlfriend!

Start investing your time in you, not your boss or your company.

Director 1, that depends on your company. Where I work certifications get you promoted faster than anything else probably other than an MBA. Certifications don’t necessarily lead to a leadership role but they do get you promoted depending on your job and role.
I’m sure there are leadership or management certifications out there as well. The question is who will pay for it and will it get you promoted to a leadership position.
Mentoring with a leader, that you respect, and or have watched in their career can also do a lot of good. Especially if they advocate for you.

When you have performance reviews and express interest in management, what’s the feedback you’re receiving?

Apply for a supervisor position in CCU CLRU or PCS. After you also have the title and a year in apply to the area you really want most. (Urbi arbi lit etc)

I have started actively looking outside my current employer. I would love to stay there, but like you said it may not happen there.
I have done everything I can to make myself stand out, formal and informal mentorships, projects with Sr. Leaders, back up supe for my manager when she is OOO, all while being a high performing rep in my current job.
The feedback I keep getting from hiring managers or managers running the developmental programs I have applied to is keep doing what you're doing. I have not gotten any new or tangible feedback in a very long time.
I also wanted to see if obtaining any certifications would help with my future career goals.

It may, or may not matter to your employer, but you have a degree? If not, there are leadership programs available probably in your city that you can participate in to begin to hone your leadership skills. Leadership skills are what will get you a position in management.

Leadership is leadership. I would start asking some very hard questions about exactly what it is the company or your leader is looking for where it has to be specific to your company. If you’ve led people, if you’ve hired and fired, if you’ve had performance conversations and coaching conversations, it does not matter where you’ve had those.
If you’re company/leader is telling you that what you’ve done in the past does not matter I would start wondering about how different your company expects a leader to be. Experience inside or outside the company should not matter all that should matter is that you have it.

I appreciate the candid feedback. I have a lot of leadership support and Sr. Leadership support. Although, I can see how that can be a detriment if I'm promoted out.
I will definitely ask if a MBA vs. certification and/or designations are potentially another feather to add to the cap. I don't believe anyone in management, at least that I'm aware of, has any specific insurance designations.
Either way, I'm absolutely taking the feedback of investing more time in myself and not in the company.
Again, thank you.
