If they post a range and offer below it, that’s a red flag. But also an opportunity. First, ask directly: ‘I noticed the listed range was X-Y, but the offer is lower. Can you walk me through that?’ If they dodge or refuse to match, it’s a signal they undervalue talent. If they give a reasonable explanation (budget shifts, leveling concerns, etc.), counter with data on your worth. Always negotiate :)
Coach
True. I’d rather take that approach. But I’d also be apt to move on since they weren’t honest.
Unless it clearly states that the range was for a specific geographical area (i.e., HCOL area) that you don't live in and/or you have less experience than the posting asked for, then yes I would take that as a huge red flag that they offered you below their own stated range for that role.
Coach
I see what you mean. I would think the minimum would still apply though. At least I hope it would.
Mentor
Yea could be red flag. But I would question them nicely. Maybe say something like, I noticed the range posted was between $x-x. Can you please advise if this offer is correct, as it’s not within the posted range?
Coach
Yeah I think that’s what I would do too.
You should be verifying the compensation in the first conversation before the actual interviews. I view salary ranges in job postings as just checking a box on a legal requirement and not very accurate.
Coach
Yes true that
I wonder whether to take it personally or whether they just false advertised to drum up more interest, and whether they were just going to lowball anybody and everybody.anyways.
Coach
False advertising in a job posting seems so wrong.
Say thank you but that is below the posted range and is not acceptable. Then walk away.
Coach
That’s definitely one way to do it.
