Hey Fishbowl community! I currently work as a Sales Support Specialist with 3 YOE working at a SaaS company. My dream career is to work at Microsoft or Google. I am open to different opportunities that exceed 80k+ per year. I also have a BA in Business Admin. If anyone can refer me to a great remote position I would greatly appreciate it! 😀

Hello people, how common is a Amazon to PWC move ?
I’m interviewing for a Senior Associate role and TC seems to be more competitive than role in L5.
TC $114k- Base AMZ- $73k +$38kstocks ( vesting 17k$ due next year)
TC $135k Base PWC -$81$ + Bonuses ( 50k$)
Looking for managerial skills which the PWC role avails, and L6 promo doesn’t seem to be happening soon in current role. I’m also mentally stretched. I hear WLB in PWC is just as busy but can anyone confirm if this move makes any sense. Google Amazon

My wife from Toronto and I was living in Dallas when we got married. She moved to Dallas for me, and I sometimes wonder if I shouldve moved to TO instead. This is a really tough question because there are so many variables and preferences involved. Austin is overrated in my opinion, but a lot of people seem to like it. The climate is completely different if you want to experience that. The summer is as hot as the winter in TO. SFO is incredible, and I'd say it would be worth it at least for the experience. My question for either would be, why not? Worst case you just move back.
You are right.. why not?! I am concerned of Austin’s weather, as much as I look forward to warm weather, I don’t know if that much warmth and storms I’ll be able to handle. And for SFO, I am concerned about their transit system, which is pretty good hear in Toronto; especially because I don’t see myself living in the downtown area.
Lived in Austin for 7 years and it’s unrecognizable now. Much of what I loved is gone. Be prepared for flaky people.
Toronto is such a lovely city! Perhaps also add the Colorado tech corridor to your considerations.
If you are happy with your jobs / life in Toronto, perhaps consider some vacation/rental properties in the US and Canada. Places you can visit often, work remotely, but get that feeling of living anywhere.
If you really really want to branch out, I fell in love with Slovenia and Croatia. Loved Ljubljana and Split, also but my fav was probably some small towns along the coast. ***Rovinj***
Have you visited either city? I would recommend you look at salary.com or Glassdoor, for similar jobs and the pay. I have heard horror stories of people in SFO with 6 figure jobs not being able to afford an apartment. Austin isn’t there yet, but it’s definitely getting there. I have lived in the greater Austin since 1995. A lot of the things that made it great have really changed. It still is bustling but traffic is one of the worst in the nation, I think top 20 I read a while back.
I now live in the Hutto area. I bought my house for around 180k 7 years ago. 4 bedroom2 bath around 1,500 sq ft (139 sq meters). It’s now worth between 360k-400k. It appreciated 130k in the middle of the pandemic. Will the price go down? I sure hope so, but you should be warned that housing costs are insane.
Don’t forget you now have to factor in your healthcare costs. Now you can expect to pay $150 to upwards of 350 to see a doctor. Baylor Scott and White often have a facility charge that gets tacked on to a doctor’s visit.
There are a lot of fun things to do for young couples here and I am sure SFO has many similar offerings. I honestly have been considering moving to a smaller city, even though I telecommute. Heck, I would have tried to move to Canada if I didn’t have a family.
Toronto is one of the major cities in Canada I have not been to, unfortunately. So I cannot say how much the two cities do or do not have in common.
Yes, it does get super hot. It’s made worse by the humidity being so high around here.
If you are going to move, make sure you have well paying jobs lined up. I don’t I want to discourage you for moving to the states. I just want you to be sure that you’re prepared.
Do some cost of living comparisons., and definitely some research.
Thanks a lot Optum1. This is a great insight to have, making me more inclined towards Austin. Few more follow ups if you don’t mind:
You said total of $180-200k is good to be considered middle class. Is that total comp including equity? I think I will get offered something around $150k as base and $25-30k as equity per year. Is that enough to live a comfortable life and even save? This would just be my salary. My SO is yet to find a job there.
Also, I have been more inclined to SFO while my SO wants Austin for a better life. While i agree but I feel that SFO has more job opportunities and since we both are good in taking care of finance we might be able to save there more. I am assuming I might end up with base closer to $170-180k with per year equity still close to $25-30k. And as I said my SO still needs to find a job in these places.
While I am inclined towards Austin for a better life, but more job opportunities and able to make more money makes me inclined towards SFO.
Am I way off here? Would love to hear your thoughts.
Why don't you utilize a digital nomad visa? You could have passive income from renting the home you own in Toronto plus your income via working remotely.
Malta has a great visa program right now. No income taxes. And the monthly minimum income is quite reasonable.
Not yet. I need a job that lets me work 100% remotely. 🤞🤞
There are some passive income visa programs via Italy. Portugal has one as well (D7 I think?), and I believe Croatia has a digital nomad visa (the income requirements are skewed toward 6-figure tech salaries though which I don't qualify for unfortunately).
