Help me decide an offer to move from big law to a specialized boutique paying above market. I don’t hate my current job and have been getting more interesting cases recently, but I initially explored lateraling because staffing was inconsistent at current big law, and there were several months last year I billed 20 hours or so to the point that I worry about development. The offer came recently when work also picked up for me. Now I’m not sure if I should move.

I’m in a very similar position. I’m telling myself that I shouldn’t let the recent flux of more interesting deals sway my initial decision given that it could be temporary.

Why is the work inconsistent at your current firm?

Then a move would make sense. This structural issue won’t change.

Need comparative salary and bonus numbers, and class year to assess.

Do you have reason to believe work will be more consistent at the boutique?

What area of law? Are we talking litigation where cases settled?

I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? Y’all. NO ONE KNOWS HOW MANY PEOPLE, AND WHO, WILL BE LAID OFF. The economy may bounce back next month or next year. It may get much worse or maybe we just sit stagnant before things improve. When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

Pay is roughly 30% biglaw haircut, with incentive bonuses for hours and originations.
