I'm really sorry. Being out of work is stressful enough without having a child to plan for. I don't know of any current openings (I'm trying to find work right now myself with no luck), so I've been doing some freelancing in between submitting applications just to get a little money coming in. I'd recommend signing up for UpWork if you don't already have an account. There's a lot of competition, same as in the "real" world, but there are still some decent gigs on there.
I am seriously sorry that you're dealing with that. Over the past two years, I have seen more friends leave graphic design than remain in it. Things are just getting really hard and I feel you completely on that exhaustion. Retail is looking better and better by the day.
I use the in between jobs to replenish myself. I taught myself new skills and started doing jobs where I employ myself and became resourceful so I never have to rely on anyone for an opportunity to make money. It sounds like you have plenty of experience and a good portfolio, let your next design opportunity come to you. Attract don’t chase, your skills are valuable.
starting out in a creative field always comes with uncertainty. if you want stability, find a stable job - any job! one that ensures a paycheck. once you have that and know you can put food on the table for your family, use your spare time to work on your freelance career. create work for fake "clients', build up your portfolio, start marketing yourself on social media and creative groups, get feedback, hone your skills, fine tune your work, put yourself out there again, and then the clients will come. keep building on it till your freelance career is stable enough to support you and quit your day job. it sounds like a lot but sometimes its the only way. everyone wants to follow your passion but its more important to be able to fund your passion, till your passion funds you.

This is such a tough situation to be in and I feel for you. Any chance you can start freelancing given that you already have experience and can try to gain a client base with the portfolio of work you've done? Could also be a potential way for you to do work that you're interested in but know it's not stable especially at the beginning
I’ve seen a couple graphic design jobs on LinkedIn.
