Hey there. I’m feeling like I might not be in the right field. I recently started a masters in accounting, and the program is geared towards people that don’t have an undergraduate in accounting (my undergrad is in sociology). I made my way into AP about 4 years ago, and I realized I really liked what I was doing, but sometimes I would be asked to post JEs and I didn’t fully understand what I was doing. Hence, I decided it was time to get my knowledge up. I picked up a job at a CPA firm where I

Learning something new, especially in a tough field like accounting, is rough. But struggling doesn’t mean you’re not smart enough. It just means you're still learning. That CPA firm sounds like they’re not giving you the support you need. Maybe look for a better environment before deciding AP is your only path.

Thanks for the encouragement. Yea, I’ve been paying more attention and I think you’re right, this place is just not very supportive. I was given a prepaid insurance schedule to update for the new year and the schedule they had was very confusing (not like what I learned in class). So I asked for help and he told me we would go over it. The next day, I saw it was done and he had signed off already. So, it was evident that he just didn’t want to explain it to me and it was just easier to do it himself

Might just need a new job. You do not need to be that smart to do decent in accounting. There’s lots of idiots even at “prestigious” accounting firms. My only suggestion would be to try to learn on your own before asking a question most of the time

Right. Sounds like you should look to another accounting firm

It could be that you’re not getting a good answer when you’re asking. I learn by doing, so if someone does it and shows me instead of walking me through, I won’t get it.

Cost is also the one accounting class I didn’t like and was my lowest accounting grade. It is different.

Yes I am also that type of learner! And ok, that makes me feel better about cost. I did really bad on the first exam and found out a few people dropped the class right after.. instructor gave a really hefty curb though, I’m guessing most people did poorly

my school called cost/managerial accounting the weed out course. it’s difficult as hell, so don’t feel discouraged if you’re struggling in it. also, it sounds like maybe you just need guidance from different people/company…

Made it very clear to the managers that I am just getting into the field, so I was looking for mentorship. I originally went in asking for an internship because I knew my level was very low. They seemed to understand and agree, but 5 months into this place and they told me that if I’m asking a question “more than 2 times it’s a problem” because I’m “clearly not understanding the theory”. They told me not to let that deflate me but come on. So anyway, I’m struggling in my cost class and that paired with the comment just has me feeling really low and like, maybe I should just stick to AP because I’m clearly not smart enough for this? Anyone ever feel this way before? Should I just fold them now and go back to AP where I was good at my job?

also keep in mind accounting is a very broad field so there's a lot you can do with it, ie corporate accounting, controllership, tax, audit, compliance, advisory, risk, even some finance positions
