In my experience, two decades in the classroom and admin, those positions typically are filled with an internal candidate. Not always, but 80% of the time. If you have a relationship with the current director for your district, ask them to go over your resume and cover letter for strengths and weaknesses.
I’m in a small district now so there is only one director who isn’t leaving anytime soon so internal likely won’t happen but that does seem to be the norm.
I’ll definitely check in with her and ask her for feedback. Thank you!
Are there many openings for that position? In our district the sped director is also one of the associate superintendents. Just not sure how often those positions come up open.
There have been a handful come up in my general area. In some bigger districts around here they have a director and assistant directors usually split by elementary and secondary.
I’ve found that those types of positions are usually hired internally.
Do you have special Ed teaching experience?
Yep. Been a special ed teacher for 8 years now

Are you looking for a special Ed director position?

Our spec Ed director just left. She was a powerhouse, very nice but firm with high expectations. She was very familiar with special Ed law - like inside and out as she’s had to deal with all the state demands/legal cases/etc.
We also have a team of coordinators who directly report to this person, but we all had and used her cell to call if we were in a pinch in a mtg. She was involved in hiring and also firing (several ppl have been let go due to being out of compliance with paperwork or whatever). She was very good with parents too bc she wouldn’t allow staff to take the brunt of the anger/bullshit. etc. She was a proponent of shutting meetings down of it gets ugly- she’d reschedule and be there.
She was also responsible for our scheduling our PDs (with coordinators). She is a workaholic and is now the spec Ed director for a Regional Educational Service Agency.
Good luck! I wish you the best.
Too bad you're not in New Jersey there are several openings.
Also, on many occasions, is not what you know but WHO you know.
