Procter & Gamble Hi All,

Hello I got a confirmation from HR at Shell that I have been selected for a role and there will be background checks before joining the company. He said the mail will come from a 3rd party vendor for the background verification. It has been 1 week and there has been no mails till now. Is it normal? Should I follow up with the HR again?

Former P&Ger here! I had a non traditional path vs others in the company. Started in small business sales at AT&T. Then moved agency side (software consulting & brand), then client (Sr. Brand Manager at P&G), now consulting (Director Brand/Innovation Strategy). While at P&G, I was on the Brand New Hire team, UC college recruitment team, and helped many MBA students with interview coaching.
At P&G, the process is extremely rigid and systematized. Everyone has to go through the same steps/testing, now matter how hard you network — things are slightly different for undergrad and MBA interns/recent grads, but they have the same steps. Majority of the management roles start off as interns or straight from college, via dedicated recruitment teams. For higher lever positions, they mainly promote within. Although, this has been changing in recent years, especially if you have a unique experience/expertise (e.g. performance marketing/former startup founder).
My number one recommendation is to take the assessment extremely serious. You’ll be blocked for a year in applying for other roles if you don’t “pass.” They changed the assessment to entirely online, and slightly easier, right when I left. So I’m not 100% sure exactly how it’s structured, but I think it’s just a condensed version of the old process, into two parts.
Part I - Personality/Company Value Fit. Do your research on the website to understand P&G’s Purpose, Values, & Principles. As well as their Peak Performance Factors (Lead with courage, innovate for growth, champion productivity, execute with excellence, bring out our best). The assessment will revolve around those key behaviors/values. I’ll also add, avoid answering questions in the middle of the scale (i.e. select Strong Agree or Strongly Disagree)
Part II - Online Assessment. When I took the test it was an in-person, written exam. There were three sections. Numerical Reasoning (Math), Logic Reasoning (similar to the ACT, SAT, or GMAT) and Figural Reasoning (shapes and patterns). Google "Figural Reasoning Problems" or “Spatial Reasoning” to get more practice in this area. P&G also provides a practice test on their website. One caveat, the examples provided from P&G will be easier than the real assessment.
Whew! All that said, I’d be happy to help you with the interview process once you pass the assessment. :)
Best of luck!!
