Five years.
I think it's contextual and worry about applying a bright line.
I think 15 years is a pretty good rule of thumb. By that time a CEO has likely had a chance to make a significant impact on the company. They've implemented their vision, they've built a strong team and they've hopefully achieved some major milestones. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule. There are some CEOs who are able to stay in their roles for much longer than 15 years and still be effective, but for most CEOs I think it's a good idea to start thinking about succession planning after a decade or so.
