Shadyside is awesome and the strip district is pretty cool too. I like shady side a bit more because it has a Trader Joe’s but the commute can be long. Would not recommend downtown recently though given the experiences my friends shared
Downtown during the day is ok, but at night gets sketchy with all the homeless people.
North shore and strip district are nice and close to downtown.
Lawrenceville or Bloomfield or greentree or mt Lebanon
I’ve lived in Downtown, Oakland & South Oakland, Squirrel Hill, Greenfield, Upper St Clair, and now up in the North Hills.
Of those, I don’t recommend Oakland - despite its convenience, it’s college central and I lived there for 6 years… was real happy to get out as I was closing in on my 30s.
And I have a bunch of friends and coworkers spread throughout PGH. (Like Ross and West View are 15mins away from Downtown or South Side - pending where - is 10-15min)
Depends on what you’d like your commute to be and what part of Downtown you’re in - especially with parking, if you’re driving.
I'd check out Highland Park. Close to East Liberty but feels more nature-y there, if you're into that. Still walkable and close to Downtown
Seconding Shadyside and really any neighborhood that's on the Busway. A Busway commute is a FAST commute, you can get downtown from Shadyside in like 8 minutes.
What are your priorities for a neighborhood? Nice housing, plenty of bars/cafes, parks, what?
Shadyside and Squirrel Hill are excellent locations, both on the edge of Oakland (colleges). Shadyside has a little more nightlife. Bloomfield also has plenty to do (Garfield and Friendship are a little cheaper and further from Liberty Ave, but basically the same vibes). Lawrenceville is at the bottom of the hill and usually considered the "hipster" part of town, along with Bloomfield. The section of East Liberty that borders Friendship/Shadyside now has some "luxury" apartments close to the Google and DuoLingo offices. Point Breeze is even quieter, a little more expensive, and has Frick Park. I've had some friends who lived in the Strip District with mixed opinions.
