I’m about to start an internship at IBM for UX Research. I’m super excited about it, and was wondering if anyone could tell me about the design culture there or how the company is for designers? So far online I’ve only heard about the company from consultants or software engineers. For more reference I’ll be working in Austin.

I checked out your site. Your portfolio work is mostly based in design, visual execution and fine art. But you have no art direction work. Meaning, you don’t have any campaigns. You should make a few spec campaigns.

You know caption contests where you have to write a line to make a cartoon image funnier? Imagine doing the opposite — you have a line of copy but no image, what image should you use to make that line funny or have a deeper meaning?
That’s what art direction is — it’s like writing, but you are writing with imagery. Notice how that is not design. Design would be the style of how the cartoon was drawn.
Changing the presentation of your work won’t make it an art director’s portfolio. You need some campaigns.
Pick a brand. Pick a target. Your target is reluctant to buy your brand. How do you convince them to buy your brand? What do you say? Can you say it visually?
Here is an ad for Polaris watercraft, where the line says “Phenomenal towing power.” See how the imagery tells a story that adds meaning to the copy line?
NYC rates: junior AD 50k. Then it gets goofy and these huge ranges set in depending where you are, how long you’ve been there etc. Mid level 65-100k. Senior 100k - 135k. But yeah check Glassdoor for specifics.
