It depends. If you have never lived in the US and want to experience it at least once in your life, then i would say go for it. YOLO. But then you gotta factor in other factors like family, relationships, friends and career progression and money of course. Nobody can answer those questions for you.
Also considering a similar move, could be Europe or somewhere in the states. I’ll probably go through school though, just to make the transition easier —— get a break from work, make some friends, know the area well. And if I decide it’s not worth it I can move back but with some added value.
I just came back from SF, it's an amazing city...but I was shocked with cost of living. Makes Toronto feel cheap (which we all know it is not...)
I saw an 8 dollar avocado and a sandwich that was 22 dollars. Do with that info what you will...
That's pretty crazy, at least the tech salaries are a fair bit higher there on average!
Pros:
Weather is better
Pay is higher
More tech jobs
Better access to outdoor activities
Cons:
Healthcare, probably
Homelessness and drug use in SF
Crime, relatively
Cost of living still very high
Not an exhaustive list
Op, the GTA cost of living outside of owning a house is equal to MCOL cities in the US lol its not even close to the bay area
Hey OP, I’m considering this move as well. Have you started applying for jobs there and what’s your experience like?
I haven't started applying yet, but if you end up going through the process please share!
My team is based in SF. Funny enough, sure they get more mild weather overall but they don't get hot summers like we do in Toronto. They also made a point to mention how clean and safe it seemed in Toronto vs SF.
I think SF is a GREAT city to visit...but unless you're earning a stupid high amount, it's a horrible city to live in. Cost of living is inflated, everything is overpriced and it's difficult to find a decent place to live without blowing the budget.
I agree with this. San Francisco is a really fun to visit and there are soooo many things to do there. I have family there so we visit there often. However, the cost of living is ridiculous there. Gas alone is $5.89 a gallon there right now. You have to be making a really high salary to be able to afford everything there.
