I prefer an hourly job myself. Usually when you are salary they expect you to work more than 40 hours and not get paid for it. Hourly guarantees that you get overtime.
I'm salaried myself. I don't dislike it, but I'm not sure I agree that it gives more freedom. I feel like hourly employees have more freedom since employers aren't going to want or expect them to put in more than 40 hours a week to avoid paying overtime. The same can't be said for salaried positions.
If you are on a hybrid schedule and have to clock in and out and don’t meet the 8 hours while in the office, you have to go home and continue working. I work in house so I’ve rarely had to work overtime and have gotten paid well enough that I don’t need to. And during Covid, I was worried about getting sick and being out for weeks and not getting paid because you’re not clocking in and out. I have also worked where I was hourly but was not paid overtime which was so so so bad since it was a reputable firm. I would like to be salaried if I worked in house and hourly at a law firm since I would put in the most work and time.
I was salaried in CA and still got daily calculated overtime. Pretty sure paralegals can’t be exempt from overtime in CA unless they are managers. Maybe something to look into.
I've done both, but prefer salaried now that I'm fully remote. My company is based in California and employees are all over the country, so I having to clock in/out would be a real problem to accommodate everyone's needs. The other aspect of it is I can travel but still work since I'm not tied to a clock or specific schedule. I turned down a position that was offering a more money because it was an hourly position and I wasn't ready to give up the freedom that I have with a salaried, exempt position.
I've done both and I agree I prefer hourly bc I feel like salaried, they have more control about having you work longer hours and not having to pay more. At least with hourly, they don't want to pay OT. I'm hourly now and I log on at exactly 8:30 and off at 5:30.
