It's not that black and white. Both matter, but how much they matter will depend on the job (and the person hiring). Knowing the right person might get you an interview, but it doesn't automatically make you good enough to get the job.
I feel like that's similar to saying having a left foot is more important than having a right foot. Sure, technically you could hop around with just one, but having both is preferable. I don't really think it's a "one vs. the other" issue when the majority of people should be working on their skills and their network simultaneously.
Agree. I have an agent, but all my best jobs have been through my friendships.
THIS. I actually think you are spot on, especially in entertainment. Literally nobody cares about your bullet points, it's all about who you know and where you've worked before (in terms of prestige and who you know). Connections matter the most
I don’t know that I called it a hot take necessarily. It’s the entertainment industry. It’s all about who you know or who you can get in front of. It’s always been this way.
I think it’s a bit of both. You don’t make or craft those relationships without a great resume or portfolio. Sure, the relationships are great to get a foot in the door but you still need to show you have the skills to do it right.
