How am I supposed to gain professional experience in a skill if everybody wants 5+ years of said experience?? I've been told nobody cares about the online skill certifications but thats the only way I can learn the skill rn

If you have 4 years at your current job, that's close enough to apply and make your case that you already are an expert. 5 years is just an arbitrary number. You gotta sell yourself as an expert. Don't let those numbers scare you off!

5+ years of experience is usually required for mid-level roles…

Many "entry-level" jobs require 5+ years of experience now

If you’re hitting specifically ~5 years required, you’re probably coming across more of the mid-level role jobs than entry-level. The range I’ve seen is about 3-5 years. Try tweaking your search words or filters. Might yield better results.

However, if what you’re looking at is being marketed as entry-level… I feel you. I see a lot of “Experience with X required” despite it being posted as an entry-level role. I ask people in the position I’m going for how they got in, and they say to just keep applying, it doesn’t matter, etc., but no hits after dozens of applications, no matter what I do, so I don’t think that’s going to work…. Stop saying it’s entry-level if you need me to have experience I can only get by not needing it to be entry-level!

like

Its the latter. I've been with my current company for 4 years, so im not entry level, but im seeing *alot* of roles marketed as entry-level that want years of experience. Ive been applying to jobs the last 3.5 years and no luck because even the entry-level positions want an expert. It also seems hiring managers pick and choose who doesnt have to meet all the requirements versus who needs more than what they posted. Nobody wants to train anymore :(

Apply for the position anyways, what do you have to lose. I would craft a strong covering letter telling them why you are the best person for this job even if you don't have all the requirements they want. Maybe you have 9 of the 10 things they have listed as requirements for the position. Never give up the battle for what you want. Once you are in, then you can train and learn and prove yourself to them. Good Luck.

What has your experience been with new job offers and counter offers from current employers? In my opinion, if I’m looking to leave it is because I’m unhappy and excited about the new role I’ve been offered. I’ve never been interested in a counter offer and it seems like it would ruin relationships with both employers. Interested to hear others opinions!
