How bad is it to get pregnant within a few months of joining a new firm? Think 4 months later?

People join firms WHILE they are pregnant. Honestly I wouldn’t worry about it. Your life comes first.

If you’re thinking of getting pregnant, I’d recommend waiting because I don’t think it’s a great idea—your firm might not do paid maternity leave (check your firm’s policy to see how long you have to be there before you get paid leave) and at least in big law, you could be held back a class year due to missing a good chunk of the year once you go on leave (which I’ve seen happen for first years and junior laterals).

like

This is very firm specific on how long until you're eligible for leave, but FMLA requires a year of employment. That's JUST job protection - not paid leave, which going to be a separate policy at your firm. If you wait four months and then have a full term pregnancy then you'll likely be completely fine. Start with getting a copy of the policy for parental leave and then if you need to see if there are exceptions, think about whether you want to have a conversation with someone trustworthy at the new firm. If this was big law I'd say the odds are that even if you aren't there for 12 months they'll give you full leave but idk what kind of firm you're working for.

like

I never worked in BigLaw, but based on the timing you describe above, it sounds like you’d be eligible for FMLA by the time you give birth, so I think you should be all right.

That's assuming she makes it full term. 50/50

I joined 3 months prego went out on leave and came back smoothly. Please don’t listen to old school ppl on here

OP if you’re pregnant now don’t sweat. Life happens! Just try to get as much info about the policies at your firm as you can before you announce and put in the best quality of work before leave.

How much stock do you put on benefits? I have two offers with stark differences in benefits. Job 1: role I want, but benefit sucks (2 weeks paternity leave, 20% coinsurance). Job 2: role is okay but higher level and great benefits (16 weeks paternity, 0% coinsurance, 5 more days of vacation). Total comp is the same though. I wonder if I should just focus on role but Job 2 is a large company, so I can move around after 2-3 years I’d expect. Thoughts?

A parent of one of my students told admin she thinks it's irresponsible that I won't be grading over Christmas break. I let the students know to get any work they need graded in before the break and I'll get it to it during our workdays in January. Apparently that's not fast enough for her 🙄. Is it wrong that I'm sort of pissed off by this? Should I say something?

I have access to $600k in interest-only (~3%) funds from parent's line of credit. Trying to optimize allocation. I'm closing on a $540k house in TX, looking to Airbnb it for $3k+ a month. With rising interest rates, I'm considering investing in another house in the Bay Area when prices drop. Wondering if I should pay the TX house in cash & take out a mortgage for the CA house, or split the $600k across both and take out 2 mortgages, or pay off the TX house and use a HELOC for the CA house. Thnx!

Is it the smart move to take a pay cut and clerk for a judge?

Little context: I was an ED student, full time paralegal/clerk throughout my law school experience, and a single mother. I did not take advantage of the law school extracurriculars and missed out on clerk application deadlines my final year (2020). Would it benefit me to take a pay cut as a transactional clerk by about $20k to work as a clerk for a year then re-enter firm life? I’m transactional and enjoy that line of work.

Hello Guys,

I am in a super good position at Jellyfish as a Director with a good room in terms of growth. Great responsibilities, work life balance and I strongly love my job. However, there is an opportunity to join Google Dublin as an Agency Development Manager (level 4) with strong salary, new challenges, different role and responsibilities etc. I HAVE A STRONG DOUBT about a trade off: is better to have a strong margin of growth and a good position or join Google with the above conditions?
