How can we fight back? These layoffs and jobs being replaced by Ai are only going to continue until we say enough is enough.

Ask the blue collar workers and “less skilled” workforce that the consultants have been recommending to cut since the dawn of consulting.

How the tables have turned, lmao.

lol. You beat me to it.

Two ways:

1. Start learning a physical trade skill that won’t be replaced by AI anytime soon. Diesel mechanics are in short supply. So are electricians and plumbers.

2. Find John Conner and swear allegiance to him and his cause. Form a rebel group by training in asymmetric warfare and guerilla tactics. Start creating caches of weapons that do not utilize modern computing. Amass vehicles that use limited computers and are not connected to the grid.

There’s a way to make 1 + 2 = total annihilation of AI and win Earth back for humans.

Actual tradespeople across various disciplines report that certain markets have been oversaturated for years, making an actual living difficult to extract... so definitely do the homework before romanticising 'the trades.'

Go network with the sales and ops guys. AI is replacing basic financial modeling and generic strategy work. It’s not going to replace business development and go-to-market strategy or process optimization on a shop floor

Yes EY1, but someone has to pick the best one, and I’m that someone 😉

Last time I used AI for a 3P, it recommended I split the bathroom into 2 rooms and put it on either side of an injection mold machine.

funny

Simple answer is that YOU as consultants need to become more productive and add more value to your clients. There are many skills AI cannot replace.

Nice joke

It’s always interesting to watch people who have not created a company be upset when someone else doesn’t provide you with a job. First and foremost companies have a legal obligation to shareholders as do you as an employee. It’s a privilege to not have to risk everything to build something. I recommend instead of wasting your time trying to fight technological advances that you build your own company and then you don’t have to worry about being laid off.

I've always said the only jobs that are safe from AI are strong union jobs.

I.e. Screen acting is the best candidate for AI however the SAG union has effectively negotiated it off the table

likefunny

Market forces will always remain at play. The point remains though that strong unions including the SAG and the WGA were able to build in anti AI concessions in the workers agreements with their employers

Consumer spending is one of our only real cards to play. If AI adoption continually results in more layoffs, slower pay growth, or pay cuts, consumers have less to spend. Who will sustain the demand for these companies? AI agents don't need Doordash. AI agents don't care what points bonus Chase is offering. AI agents don't buy gas to get to work. The companies betting heaviest in AI adoption that rely on a consumer economy will eventually eat themselves alive.

like

And AI doesn’t need seat licenses so software sales go down ironically

Reskill. Buy the book, "The Consultant's AI Companion" or something similar (there are many good resources out there). Learn how to create agents that can consume the more mundane aspects of your work. Become a ChatGPT/Claude/Gemini expert. Use custom GPTs. Leverage NotebookLM for reesearch. Prototype using Claude artifacts. This is a time to get excited, not a time to fight against the inevitable.

How you fight back? First infiltrate the organization apply to be a mechanic or tech for these AI work there for till your 65-69 years old, then you will know how to beat these AI and report it back here.

Somebody should go find all those bank tellers who were forced to live on the streets because they were replaced by ATM machines. They can tell you how they fought back.

I would say the best course of action is to grow up. Times change, and you have to adapt. “But it’s different this time” is the same bad excuse lazy people have used for ages. Your concerns are legitimate. “Fighting back” is not. Learn to provide value that can’t be provided by automation/AI. That’s the answer.

At Big 4 firms, people are always coming and going. That’s part of how the business is built. The firms have a pyramid structure, so there are only so many spots at each level. People are reviewed regularly, and the skills the firm needs can change based on the market (like AI, new tech, or shifts in demand). Some people leave because of performance, some because their skills don’t match current needs, and sometimes because the firm hired too many people. When a lot of people leave around the same time, it can look like a layoff — but this kind of turnover has always been part of the model.

From the employee’s point of view, it still feels the same: you don’t have a job anymore. That’s why many people call it a “layoff.” It’s a simple word and feels less personal. But not every separation is a company-wide layoff. There’s a difference between normal workforce management in a performance-based firm and a large, formal reduction in force. Using the right words helps people better understand what’s really happening.

funny

I agree we need to organise, the situation is only going to get worse. Even lawyers are getting replaced by AI and their work is quite contextualised

Our firm told everyone no bonuses this year due to the pandemic. However, people like myself with high utilization received a “bonus” in terms of a gift card. My director notified me of this, but the other day my boss was mentioning how no bonuses this year really sucks. I was told by the director to not mention it to anyone but I figured if anyone knew I got one it’d be my boss. I feel super uncomfortable now because do I essentially lie to my boss because I’m not supposed to talk about it.
