Wanted to highlight Prudential Financial’s hiring practices. They rescinded my offer once I attempted to negotiate the salary. The official reason given was that I didn’t “sound excited enough”.
They then admittedly gave the offer to someone who was less qualified. There were other red flags throughout the job offer process that the HR team should overall be ashamed of.

Beyond the basics of knowing the brand/company/industry/competitors, really buff up on your analytics & tool boxes. Also, be conversant on the way marketing integrates with the rest of the enterprise. Unfortunately, the in going assumption will be that you are lite on “real business” skills - since most agency folks are. You have to demonstrate that you are more than a “mar comms manager”.
You’re going to be held accountable for driving actual, tangible business results. How pretty something is, will no longer be a key metric. In other words, become an expert on the consumer, their journey, and determine how to best connect the dots between marketing and sales enablement. - I just joined an in house marketing team after several years in the large agency world so that’s my key take away so far
Search linked in for connections you have (fellow alums, friends of friends) who have similar roles and transitions. Set up calls or coffee chats to ask them what your goals should be, where they’ve seen other agency ppl not transition well, what other agency ppl have brought to the mktg role, etc
I’ve always wondered how hard it is to shift to driving the projects and the agency vs. reacting to and pushing MM. So i’m following the original question.
