How do I gear myself toward doing litigation? I do trials sometimes multiple a week and I am doing felonies in court too. What do I need to do to prep myself for being a top candidate in 5 years?

How many years have you been practicing? Depending on your answer I suggest making the switch sooner rather than later. You will likely lose some years of experience due to switching practice areas (example hired as a second or third year instead of fifth). Your skills are transferable but it will get to a point where it’ll be difficult to cross over

Former APA here, as you apply, have a total number of trials, outcomes, and highest charge level. Be prepared with the names of some of your biggest cases, winning verdicts, the highest charge, the longest duration, etc. Have letters of recommendation from judges or court staff. Sometimes it’s who you know that will help get your foot in the door a little bit ahead.

Human interest stories might not be where the money is, but making the switch has saved my sanity after the tragedy I’ve covered the past few years.

How does a consultant or associate director/above in industry manage their properties if they are always in meetings ~7-8 hours per day? Eg does one call contractors after work hours? Does one hire an individual property manager to take care of a few properties? Does one hire a property management firm?

I imagine one can still self manage as long as you have initially found the go-to people for your maintenance/fixes (eg plumber, electrician), then can quickly text them for appointments

I was one of the big firm stealth layoffs in covid and joined a boutique firm in Sept. They came sort of close to matching my salary but I moved to SoCal and have an opportunity to jump back in to big law and get $100k raise. The people at the small firm are so nice, but hours are nuts and if I’m going to work this much, I might as well get paid more, right? Is it too soon? How do you tell them when the managing partner took you under his wing?
