How do you all turn your brains off after work? It doesn't seem to matter what I do, work just infiltrates my brain at all hours. What's the key to mentally switching back to personal life, because I can't find it...

One technique I've used to some success is to create a border in my mind between work and my own time. Try doing the same thing every day when work is done, whether it's taking a walk, or listening to music in the same chair, or cooking a meal. Just getting involved with something for a while as a routine can get you used to the idea that work is over for the day. It can be a good way to transition to being on your own time.

^This is great! I have a playlist that I listen to on the drive to work and another one for after work. I guess I never thought of it that way but you’re absolutely right!

Go for a walk, and during the walk practice mindfulness. You need to be in the moment to be fully present with your home and personal life

You have to retrain your brain. I use the drive home to decompress, yell, cry, scream, prioritize for tomorrow or whatever. That's it, that is all my job gets of me. Then, whenever work starts to creep in I immediately think of something else. That alternate thought can be about whatever, cloud formations, a project, tv show, whatever. Just refuse to allow work to take anymore of you. Healthcare will take all of you if you let it, Give 110 percent at work but when the workday is over it is over. Takes practice but it can be done. I'm retiring this year after 32 years with a life and a soul by learning how to do this.

Yup. Always been a night owl and just prefer late nights to early mornings. So it's a struggle, especially if there's some early meeting, deadline for the next day. Yet, somehow I manage and function pretty well.

You should find something you like to do and do it once a week, like going to the park, going to the mall for a walk, or something else that distracts your thoughts. Another thing that helps me personally is fenshui, burning sage when I have a lot of thoughts, that calms my mind and I can sleep very well. Also, vanda, when you get off work, take a bath with that fragrance.

Essential oil diffuser with lavender and a big shot of Crown Royal.

Take 3-5m to move your full attention to your breath and body sensations. Your su needs time to reset and refocus. This practice is like polishing on the clutch to chafe gears. ⚙️

So I had been working as medical interpreter up to the early part of this year. Today, during an interview, the Director with whom I was interviewing genuinely urged me to consider pursuing a career as a PA or even attempt to go to medical school. I had considered it in passing before but today was about the third or fourth time that someone had earnestly nudged me in that direction. Has anyone here made such a career pivot before? I love working in healthcare, there’s nothing like it.
