Sounds like harassment. HR?
Don’t bother. HR works for the firm not you. If anything they’ll keep that info to use against you when they want.
Before reporting to HR, confronting colleagues, or otherwise escalating the issue—which I agree is sex discrimination and is likely not the only sexist thing going on—consult with a plaintiff side employment attorney. They can give you a script of what to say when you report this issue, and what to look out for once you report, including overt and subtle retaliation (exclusion from meetings and work social events, denial of work opportunities, other malicious gossip, etc.)
This… so much this
From my experience (broker/dealer space) that happens in one of two situations. Either men are insecure AF and believe you must be sleeping your way to the top (which you just gotta ignore) OR you have accidentally put yourself in situations where optically it looks that way. Case in point, one of the directors I work with is good friends with my husband. As a result, it is normal for me to jump in his car first when we are carpooling to client site because I wanna talk friend gossip. What I didn’t realize was that optically it looks like we are a little too close for most people’s comfort.
I was going to say the same thing. I used to be in broker/dealer and now I’m in Government, and it is the same way here. I’ve always been super mindful of who I’m seen with and stuff cause goodness people will watch you when you’re successful.
OP, stay away from HR for now
Question: Do you want to keep this job or do you want to cash out?
This is at work?
Been there, and at first it sucked, but then I decided to agree with whatever was being said about me, like “oh yeah, totally doing that. My gosh, what else did you hear” 🫢
Turn the tables on them. The rumors stopped pretty quick.
As a leader that people have assumed that about. Ignore it, don’t engage it. If it gets to where it effects your work or ability to do your job, partner with HR and have that conversation with them. Most companies have a 0 tolerance policy on that type of thing but I always work with HR on this. And if they are involved find your companies ethics or contact a HR person above your HR ( HR VP if needed)
