I have recently joined EY SaT group as senior consultant recently in Netherlands. I’m tripple masters in MS economics, MBA and MS business analytics. Have 4 YOE in different industries but no M&A experience specifically. Any ideas what company should be offering me? I’ll be working as expert on commercial due diligence, FDD and valuation teams and doing automation alongside. is it wise to demand higher salary or promotion soon after I have proven that I can work and do it better than most?EY

By loving the process. Taking that zen mindset of giving yourself to the moment and really living it.
That's an interesting spin. I came from a construction background but took my cynicism and hammer with me. I'm doing it wrong, though. I'd recommend your approach.
In the classical Maslow’s pyramid, once your basic survival needs are met, finding meaning becomes essential. We all absolutely need it to live a full life.
For the last few years, I have been working on partnering up with others who think along the same lines. One way to do it is to look for clients and agencies who are more aligned with your values. Another is to think outside the box about how to put your talents to a good use.
We as creatives hold so much more potential than we realize... We are trained to persuade and inspire, to make people see things in a different light. Our power lies in deciding where and how we apply these skills to shape the culture around us.
Meaning? You ever mopped a floor and lived in an RV before?
This job means I can eat three times a day, live in an apartment and finally buy my family presents.
That’s a lot of meaning to me.
Money is not there for me yet. I’m in a country where ad people are underpaid in the first half of their career (it becomes better in the latter half so I’m told). But thankfully I enjoy the process of ideating cool, weird stuff and executing them. The bonus is I get to work with passionate people who show me that it’s an enjoyable, fun job after all.
I agree w the comments about being grateful for just having a job that pays the bills, that allows u to work indoors in bad weather, doing non-manual labor. (In other words, count ur blessings.)
Putting that aside, what gives my job meaning is accepting the challenges, and rising to meet them. There’s a challenge in every brief, whether it’s accelerating the sales volume of Skittles in Q1 without product innovation or packaging change, or getting people to feel good about adult diapers. Okay, it’s not life and death. But it’s usually quite hard. Success usually requires brains, creativity, and perseverance. So when I do succeed, I always find that really satisfying.
I guess any job can be meaningful if u accept the inherent challenge of doing it well.
Find a non-profit you feel is worthy and donate your skills a few hours a week. Before long, you won't mind working on packaged goods for P&G if you have something else going that makes you feel good.
I’m sure it sounds “negative” to hear things about yourself that are true but you’ve decided to ignore because you don’t like hearing them.
As long as we’re taking stock of each other: you’re a snake-oil salesman. Just like me. The difference is, you think you’re living a pious life and helping others. The only way you can possibly believe that is to shut your eyes to the effects that your work has on the world. It’s the same way drug dealers and hit men and Pitbull get through the day.
I wish you well, but I do NOT wish you peace. I wish you’d let yourself feel the unease that comes from asking yourself hard questions. But if you dismiss anything that doesn’t prop up your current self-image as “negativity,” that’ll never happen. Anyway, I tried.
You’re in advertising. Zoom in and you’re a shill; zoom out and you’re the opposite of an artist. Enjoy the process of problem solving—“culture” is bullshit.
When I cut something I really love I feel like I’m putting beauty into the world. Especially a lot of my fashion work, those feel like art pieces even though yes, they’re selling something. I don’t kid myself, I know I’m not solving world problems. But it still makes me happy.
We’re not here to change the world, we’re here to convince people Bounty is better than Brawny.

If you want meaning in your job, advertising is a bad choice. I got into this biz because I didn't want a real job and it's been a blast ever since. I find meaning elsewhere.
I struggle with this too. It helps me to find subtle ways to make a positive impact in the work itself and in the office... using inclusive language, calling out damaging stereotypes and culturally insensitive language (stop calling meetings “pow wows” y’all 🙄), etc.
I used to flip pizzas for a living, get to take care of and spend a lot of time with my family, befriended incredible people in this business, have side projects that mean a lot to me, and do occasionally some pro bono work too. I try to take nothing for granted.
But I also often feel like my career isn’t purpose driven, it’s profit chasing. Maybe I’m asking too much. Or maybe I just need to be patient and keep chasing impact over awards and titles.
Thanks all!
Enjoy the money? Shit man you could be flipping burgers.
We all understand the money part. If you couldn’t mention money, what would you say?
Just accept that there is very little meaning in the 9-5 portion of your day. This is true for a lot of people.
Volunteer for a cause you believe in or start a side hustle, to find meaning. Enjoy the pay and having access to creative and smart people who can grow your network and give you access to the best makers of content and storytelling.
Jobs with positive impact don’t pay well. Stressful or soul-sucking jobs do. You can have the best of both worlds: money from 9-5 and meaning from 5-9.
