How do you get into the contractor pool at different companies?

I am a couple of months into my first contractor role at one of the FAANG companies. I only got my foot in the door because of a direct contact to the person in charge of my department. This is my first freelance stint at any company ever. Ive always been full time. And when i reached out to this person, i was lookong for full time.

Given the 🔥 hiring market, did the layoffs 9-12 months ago cost firms more to just hire a bunch of people back? Firms paid severance back then to just now pay on boarding plus signing bonus plus training plus staffing.

Buying puts on GME? Am I too stupid to join the hedge fund losers that are potentially looking for idiots like me to take over their positions? But logically all short squeeze ends at some point. On Thursday when price dropped to $100 then rose back to $300, that’s the shorts covering their position so guessing squeeze is already coming to an end?

Due to laterals and difficulty hiring I’m now in a position as a 2nd year corporate/M&A attorney where I have the responsibility/expectations of a mid-senior level associate. How can I make the most of this and grow/thrive rather than drown under the outsized responsibility or burn out?

I'm in a group where I get great reviews each year and earn praise from clients, but partners don't invest much in me or let me work on the "good" deals (I always get the scraps). I'm also the only black attorney in my group, which may or may not be relevant. I doubt I have a chance of making equity partner, though I also don't want to. If you were me, would you go to a competitor just to stick it to people here? Or mail it in, shoot for a NEP/counsel-type gig, collect paychecks, and coast?
