How do you help family and friends outside of law understand your career? There have been many times when I’ve been told that I don’t pick up the phone enough to check on loved ones. Others times, I’ve had individuals say to me that “you’re too busy for your own good.” “You’re helping everyone else but not yourself.” How many times can you tell your family that litigation is demanding; that at times, you live law? If you’re not in the legal profession, you’re on the outside looking in!

I learned many years ago that its futile. Don't expect them to understand what it is that you do all day. Just do your best to make time for them.

They keep asking - are you done working? You need to explain that it never ends .. they can't get it. Especially if you are running your own business.

like

Sooo true! Or there will be that remark of “I know you’re busyyy, but you really need to do this or that” - in a type of snide, sarcastic way; not realizing that my clients are going through hell and with me being their advocate, I have to be attentive to that.

I just tell them the truth honestly: hey mom I love you, you are the best mom in the world. I can’t answer your phone earlier because I was very busy with work. It doesn’t mean I love you any less.

My parents were CEOs and we have a lot of other white collar professionals in the family. They mostly get it. I somehow failed to comprehend the amount of work. lol. Whoops.

Thank you. That’s helpful. I have some white collar professionals in my family as well; however, though they understand what I’m going through in my career, I still feel like there’s a bit of a disconnect. All lawyers are not practicing the same type of law. There’s that assumption out there that “all” lawyers should be doing incredibly well enough to take a break; to take significant time out for family and friends; to take a breather for a few weeks. And that simply isn’t so for all of us.

No matter how demanding litigation is my family comes first. Jobs will come and go..Hopefully my family will be there for me forever.

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

I am concerned with fulfilling billable hours requirement. I’m required to hit 2100 hours yearly and I’m at ~1,500 hours and I think I’ll hit 150-180hours this month. What will happen if I don’t hit my targeted amount by the end of my year.

What do you do when you feel the goalpost has been/is being moved re: billable requirements? Like there's a spoken vs unspoken? I chose this job based on billables vs salary and what I'm being told I'm expected to do now is 20-30% (at least) > than what was initially agreed upon. Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. I'm grateful to have lots of good work but not sure how to course correct.
