Check yourself using the HALT acronym. Consciously ask yourself if you're Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired. If you're any of these things, address them first, acknowledge they exist as the culprit, and give your students a break.
I really really like this thank you
Oh. My. Goodness. I feel this way on tired days. My best thing to do is make sure to get 15 minutes alone in a dark room during lunch time or prep time if possible. Sometimes, I set up a quiet independent learning activity where I say it is important everyone stays in their seats for 15 or 20 minutes. No bathroom, no drinks, no special requests, no random questions. I spend about 15 minutes prepping for it with them but 20 minutes of silence is enough to calm down my overstimulated brain. I tell them it is good training for endurance, problem solving, and concentration. It soothes everyone's nerves truthfully. Most of the kids love it...now that they know the expectations, know they can live without asking me questions constantly, and they know it is a short time.
Oooh I'm DEFINITELY gonna have to try that.
I pick and choose my battles. I also make sure that I don’t take work home, so I can have time to myself.
Take a ‘teacher time out’ if really necessary and leave your classroom for a few deep breaths!
I have that problem too. I often have to stop and take a breath to remind myself that it’s not them and maybe find some fun in your day to keep it light!
I let them know when I’m not feeling my best and ask them to be more considerate of that and most times they respond well.
Hmm I might try it but I teach Kindergarten lol so we'll see how that goes over
What we all must remember that out of all the tools have to use at our disposal, the most important tool we have is ourselves, our instincts, our compassion, our experience. Well like all tools, there will be days when the tool will be easier and more readily useable than other times. When we feel our inner resources depleted, we must do whatever we find useful to regain our emotional center so that we can be the best that we can be. On those days we are not, we must go home and reflect, dust ourselves off, and come back the next day ready to do the job. Teaching is not a sprint, it is a marathon and there will be missteps!
Acknowledge my present feelings and why I am feeling that way. I would also ask them to bare with me through my cranky phase because we all are humans s have rough emotional patches in our lives. I would also use it as an opportunity to teach about what triggers these differences in emotional responses in the body and to control them.
I think that using it as a teaching experience for my students is the best way to turn a negative feeling into a positive experience.
I know lunch is short and you have to feed yourself and pee, but sometimes I lock my classroom door, turn off the lights, and do breathing exercises, meditation, or pray for ten minutes.
Personally I completely make time for me. When I’m home I’m in my time. At school I’m in work mode. I take a good 20-45 minutes to do something just for me. Garden, read, watch tv, play a game, cook. Anything for just me.
I put on a good social story, mostly Julia Cook, and turn the lights out. It calms the students down and gives me the mind break I need.
