Conscious Discipline. Your goal is to get your student out of the survival brain state. Validate how they are feeling by stating what you see, "Your arms are going (....), your face is doing this (....), you seem (angry)." Wait for them to stop and look at you. Then smile and take a deep breath.
Next say, "You were hoping it was time for (independent reading), but it is time for (whole group)".
Give a choice: "You can (stand) during whole group or (sit) during whole group. Which would work for you?"
Say, "I will come back and you can tell me your choice."
If they make a positive choice, say "You chose (.......). Way to go!"
A punching bag!
I use this for my student who is emotionally disturbed and has meltdowns.
