Also in my personal experience, above market comp = bad work life balance.

Ask what time people generally go home for the day. Whoever you ask will probably offer up something like “but people log back on as needed” or “but there is rarely evening or weekend work”

Generally agree, but wanted to say that I did a lot… like, a lot of shopping (which I don’t consider a hobby) when crushed in big law. Granted, I mostly did it online and I definitely think it was a maladaptive thing, but yeah, did quite a bit of it.

In my personal experience, if I asked them why they joined this particular firm? They usually say to leave big law, don’t work past 7pm etc

ask. and it's still hard to know for sure.

avoid amazon meta etc. Google works u hard but pays well

Eh. This is repeated often but bears repetition: it depends on the org and specific team at the company.

Just ask. Ask what the typical day is like, ask if vacation needs to be approved, etc.

like

Ask if there’s flexibility in hours for childcare pickup/drop off.

Yup. That’s not a Yes/No question, that’s a No/Excessive details question

Any insight on BlackRock WLB?

Anyone familiar with nanny taxes?
We've always just paid cash to our previous nannies and our new one is requesting to be paid via a W-2.
That will force us to pay additional 7.5% in FICA as employers.

Can we pay her on a 1099? How does that work and do we have to contribute anything ourself if we do similar to W2?

Please keep unhelpful judgments to a minimum regarding us trying to pay cash

Jr. Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm in Central Florida. Good credentials; top 10% at T14, law review. Sick of private practice bc of hours and pressure. Also, not enjoying the work that Central Florida offers, but want to live here.

I want to one day have my own firm. Trying to think outside the box on how to get the experience w/o being in big law for ten years.

Thinking of applying to be an ASA and to the FL AGO. Would like trial experience or civil rights/con law work.

Thoughts appreciated!

I want to work for The Walt Disney Company corporate offices. Anywhere. I don't care where there's an office. I want to work for that company. I don't know how to drive in rain or snow, but if they have an office in places that snow, I WILL MAKE THE SACRIFICE 🤣

But I still have questions though 🤔 -

What is the culture like?
What are the work hours?
Does Disney pay for relocation for new hires like some of the FAANG companies do?

How did current in-house attorneys find their positions? I am currently in big law with 3 years of experience. Seems that most recruiters can only help me lateral to other big law firms.

What’s a fair expectation for my first raise? Publicly traded co with ~2500 employees. I’ve been doing litigation with the company for almost 3 yrs and have only had a 2% cost of living raise so far. Graduated in 2014. Base comp is $127.5k in the Philly area. I see salaries all over the place in this site and it’s hard to tell whether mine is competitive.

Big law specialist with an offer to be the CFO and GC of a 250M AUM hedge fund. All in comp would probably be ~$300k, so about $100k less than where I would be in big law (including bonus). Potential to get involved in the business side, but most likely more of a back office role (I would also be the only legal hire - main goal would be cutting outside legal cost and streamlining processes). Does this sound like an attractive offer? What exit options would I have?

Or should i just try to find a job with a salary that covers a nanny salary and accept that i will never see my son on weekdays (which would be sad for both of us)? TIA!

When I moved in-house a year ago as a BigLaw mid-level, I took a 45% pay cut, far more than I was comfortable with (although I was fine with a 20-30% cut). I took the job because it was a great role and I was focused on making the jump in house and developing the skills I wanted, which required me moving away from my firm practice area. Now that my year-end review is coming up, how do I ask my company for a significant pay raise (not just a 2-5% inflation-matching raise)?
