You know you're doing something right when people around you are happy and motivated while achieving goals and hitting targets. One sign of being a good leader is having a team that respects you.
Hmm, this is a great question. I would ask the question, is anyone following you? Are you building other people up i their roles? Are you growing as a leader? Those are some of the questions I would ask to answer that question.
Riddle me this... what do YOU think are hallmarks of a good leader? Try to answer with characteristics of leaders that you happily followed previously in life when you were not a leader (rather than your expectations of yourself).
You will know if your leadership abilities are what they should be by the people you supervising..Are they receptive to your directives and critiques, are they willing to do the things ask of them not to mention the things you don't ask of them. Do they believe in you and know you have their best interests in mind and the trust you in knowing you will stand with them fight for them and more than anything you genuinely care about them!!!
You’re seeking to understand whether you are a good leader. That’s a really good start.
I think of so many things when it comes to leadership. Creating a safe-to-speak up environment is probably number 1. Always learning about leadership. There are some wonderful TikTok creators and podcasters who have impactful content.
Are you aware of biases your team could have? Do you intentionally enhance diversity and diversity of thought? Are you trauma informed? So many at work have had work-based trauma because of poor leaders. And are your communications clear? Do you think in rearms of letting your team members shine and working on their development? Do you seek to hire people smarter than you and are comfortable with that versus threatened by it? And do your team members know that family is first and you will always have their backs? Are you able to prioritize and deprioritize? To you foster continuous improvement and accountability?
All this with avoiding micromanaging and tolerance of mediocrity.
Great prompts from others on this! I agree that there’s an external and internal dial on this question. And in the workplace, those external opinions and perspectives can have a huge impact on getting called up to the next level, or getting cut. The way you asked this question makes me wonder what’s making you feel not so good about your skills right now? It would help to know more about where this is coming from to answer your question better. If you need a quick coffee chat with a longtime leadership coach this week, feel free to reach out. Happy to connect and support your confidence boost!
Well it isn’t just about getting your workers to like you. Also it isn’t just about executing the bidding of your superiors. I guess it’s about clearing away impediments for your team to deliver and develop themselves. It isn’t always about keeping other people happy either though as if you’re really changing and improving things then someone somewhere is going to have an issue with it. Honestly though don’t listen to me as I was sacked from my last leadership job
You at least know that you are trying to be a good leader because you reflect upon it. Good leaders all have wisdom and earned that wisdom through action and weighing the outcome along with some good mentors.
It seems like you are concerned about your performance at work. This shows that you care about your job, which is a good thing. To evaluate your progress, you can ask yourself if you feel like you are accomplishing what is expected of you. Additionally, it might be helpful to have a one-on-one meeting with your boss to discuss your performance and areas where you can improve. It is equally important to ask your direct reports and staff how you can help them and what they would like to see happening. Keep reflecting on these things to make sure you are on track.
A great way to find out how your direct reports feel about you as a leader is to ask them. For example you could share that you want to understand how valued they feel. Ask them what in particular in the last week gave them that feeling. From there, engage in discussion around how to continue or correct. You could apply this to any area of leadership where you have uncertainty.
