I went from procurement to product counsel - it’s doable

not hard, if you are in tech the legal issues are the same - Ai, data privacy, IP etc
Lateraling within your company can be easier. But if you're hiring for a product counsel there will be lots of people with product counsel experience that will be better candidates than someone who only has commercial counsel experience. It's not that you can't do it but that it's much harder to switch because you're up against people who aren't switching.
Hard to say in a vacuum. What's your current practice area?
Commercial counsel could be pretty broad. I think you’re looking at this wrong.

If you know that’s what you want, work on gaining that experience while in the commercial role—observe, talk with product counsel, cover for them when they’re out of office, read all the training materials, etc. If you can speak intelligently about it and say you’ve done it, you can get a product counsel job as your next job.
