How important is brand name companies on your resume in your early career. Ive been working at Huron for 3 years but recruiting outwards due to being underpaid. Im getting interviews at much smaller boutique firms who are willing to pay 50% more of what I’m making rn and no big firms are hiring atm. Im wondering if moving to small boutique consulting firms will hinder my career progression and how ill recruit to larger firms in the future. Should i wait for prominent names or take these jobs?

Honestly working at a brand name company changed my career options.

My friends who worked at smaller companies but with arguably better experience and qualifications struggled to get interviews, while I had recruiters in my DMs. It makes a big difference whether people like to admit it or not.

I wasn’t answering all parts of OP’s question, I was answering about my friend. For OP, I think it’s absolutely a good move to jump from Huron for 2X the comp. They already have the Huron brand on their resume, plus a company that can afford 2X the comp won’t be “low prestige” vs Huron for too long

Brand names matter but Huron isn’t a name that would make a big difference. I’d take the money.

like

Aligned with SC on and will add: The name matters more the earlier you are in you career and then again maybe again later, depending how you’d like to wrap up your career - similar to where you went to school. When you are in the middle it isn’t as important as long as you are gaining applied experience in growth minded roles. You can then swing back into household brands, if you want.

FWIW: I went to Huron sized firm out of school, then to a boutique tech, a couple of niche smalls, B4 MD, and now am a SP at a household name with 20 more working years ahead of me. I have a target to exit to industry, eventually but who knows if that will come along.

like

Take the 50% hike because when you join a big name - they will exploit your desire to be with them and won’t offer you much hike.
Once you take the hike - focus on your competency, marketing yourself, certifications. Opportunities will come once the market gets better

like

I didn't realize this at the beginning of my career but people use major company names to validate you. You have to take into consideration your end goal. Do you want to stay with a larger company for prestige and status, or go to a smaller company where you will probably have better work-life balance? I considered a job offer recently that was 60% higher but I knew there would be no exit opportunities and that I would probably die in the role. If I were in a dire position, I would have taken it, but right now, I am in the process of changing careers and on track to get to that number in 4 years.

like

True, but Huron is still relatively niche - not saying not respected, but focused in healthcare / education. and the pay speaks for itself. Regardless, a >25% raise is worth considering regardless of where you're leaving from / to.

I am at a 60-person boutique and love the culture & competitive comp. Most people have 8+ yoe prior to coming here and many have BB or MBB experience that opens doors.

But people get poached often to larger firms and industry, so it isn’t the pigeonhole that you may be thinking.

like

Had the same concern a while back. Had a boutique consulting offer and big name industry offer. Took the lower paying industry offer bc better exit opps + actual corporate experience

like

I also dont know how Huron is recognized but seems to have its respect/recognition among big 4. Should i stay or leave for more pay?

I left for a boutique from Huron and my exit opportunities were way better than staying (yes Huron significantly underpays), so it probably depends on the boutique. Huron was just far too niche to be worthwhile.

Plus you probably can get from a boutique to a big four as well if that’s your goal.

like

It makes an enormous difference to your trajectory.

50% increase is huge. If you will enjoy the work, take it. Often boutiques have significant cache in the market where they work, so, especially if they are predominately working in a field in which you want to remain and develop expertise, it may be an enhancement.

My question would be why such a big increase? Is it in a higher COL, you have some unique knowledge/skills they want, are you significantly underpaid, or is that a red flag they are having trouble getting bodies in the door?

If it's a good fit and a stable firm, I would not let the possibility of some future job judging Huron versus this company as a deal killer for me getting hired.

Just the opportunity, not the name. 50% increase is life changing. And don't forget current comp also impacts how you are viewed in the marketplace. Take the new job and the marketplace has hugely increased your value.

I’m at OW and have that same concern. It’s a concern.

Oof. Which practice in OW?
I’m not in NY or SF so I feel this even worse.

It's not the be all, and end all, but it helps massively. It likely gives any recruiter or hiring manager an indication that you are at least good at what you do to the point where highly reputable companies want you.

Why do we always tell people “Be the best version of yourself before starting a relationship?”
I feel this is wrong…first, if you’re someone who constantly wants to be better, this doesn’t work. Also, what happens when you’re going through things and you’re not the best version? What happens is…the going gets tough and then one person leaves the other.

I have to admit that I wasn't terribly impressed by the virtual Co-Lo for Digital. The exception to that, though, was David's insightful comment that leadership knows and expects that many of us are struggling to come back from the pandemic, and it's okay to ask for help and or take a leave. Digital culture, and how we are real and take care of each other, is just AMAZING. That speech alone made me so proud to be here and turned around a lot of my negative thoughts.
