That depends on a multiplicity of factors. There's the complexity of the role. And the experience of the new employee. Some people can transition fairly quickly as they've got related experience. Some people are going to be less experienced and need more training. And it's just a fact of human existence, some people are naturally fast learners and can pick things up quickly.
Loaded question, and some counter questions in return. Timing depends on a number of controllable and uncontrollable variables with my limited experience in people management. I've had guys autonomous in around 3 months and I've had others comfortable in a little over 6. Even then, course corrections on priorities occur.
Does the company have an on boarding program that includes training?
Are processes etc. Well defined?
Are direction and resources provided?
How many aspects of the business run on tribal knowledge?
That depends on so many things OP. For instance its going to depend on how quickly the person learns and picks things up, what role they are being trained for and how complex it is, how good the training program is, etc. Its really hard to say because some roles take much less time than others.
