Positives:
Very interesting work if you like learning about companies and the way things work. Get to meet CEOs/CFOs 1x1 at a very junior level. Comp is pretty good at most levels for good firms (not crazy high, but same for hours).
Negatives:
Comp is based on your performance, but also the fund’s performance (I can only control the former). Unlimited amount of work vs project-based roles like IB results in a feeling of always being behind and never complete. Worried about long-term sustainability of low-tech fundamental investing (or at least think comp compression is in the cards)
Huge universe of stocks to cover and potentially invest that’s why unlimited
Can you elaborate on “unlimited work?” Does this come in the form of constantly updating models, repetitious earnings calls, etc.? Also, what does a typical bonus in a good, decent and poor year equate to? Lastly, what do you cover? (E.g., domestic large cap, sector, etc.)
Amazing place to be when on an investment team. On that note, be cautious about the scale of overall business. The stage is set for big wave of acquisitions/mergers all across the industry.
I’m also very interested in lifestyle, too. I work in a product team within the private bank, so the work/life balance is unreal. Would love to maintain that. What’re the average hours?
