Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

I'd guess almost all of us, if we're being honest with ourselves. It's unfortunate because there's so much more to life than money; it's just a convenient measuring stick to use.
Yeah, that's a common mindset. Especially because money reflects certain kinds of progress. But honestly, I’ve started measuring more through the lens of family time, peace of mind, and whether I’m actually living or just surviving. For me, career wins feel way better when they support the life I want outside of work too.
You need to choose what your priority in life is but also make sure you don’t plateau. In our eduction life we have grades and a clear path and like if you stay a freshman for 3 years in a row you know you are having a problem. Same in work, many companies have levels or grades so make sure you are doing ok there relative to your were and not like staying at a 2 YOE required role for 10 years like some people do. Doing this also takes away an entry path for new hires so it is important to progress so new people can come in and grow. Even in the army if you are stuck at the same level for too long and not fit to progress you will be kicked out. Corporate hides this and most people plateau early on since they don’t have clear direction so they are not in control of their path.
That’s capitalism. Image and status gets you ahead because it’s a competition unlike countries with more socialism where no one is left behind.
It's almost easier to think of it that way. Money is a number, bigger numbers = better. A conscious effort to make myself think about it differently even though there are tons of other factors out there in life and work. Comp should just be one piece of the puzzle we take into consideration.
If I get more money and the same responsibility why not🙋🏻♀️ if I get promoted I’ll probably get 10-20k more per year but after tax and everything it won’t dramatically improve my quality of life, it might actually make my life worse cause I have to manage people now
At this time even $10,000 extra per year would be life changing
I'm guessing cuz proven track records of success and loyalty to a company and always trying to succeed, staying after, doing extra work without the need for someone to tell you. I don't think of myself through the lens of money, but i know my worth! I know what I can accomplish. I've won multiple trips to France just doing a great job!

Yes that’s the world we live in. Money makes the world go round
