Most clients either don’t have a clue what they want to play art director/writer. I used to have a client who had so many copy changes that he started writing the scripts himself. My POV is: if you’re lucky enough to have a full time job with benefits, open a brokerage account, learn gradually how to invest. When you’re not at your actual job, exercise & take care of yourself, do something you love like painting, cooking, whatever, and then study a little on how to make your money grow. What you want is no debt and more financial flexibility so you don’t have to be tied to these insane clients forever.
They’re paying us to make what they want and they don’t always listen to our advice which defeats the point of hiring experts, but that’s a different convo.
And when you’re done paying your debts, then and only then you could try to do something creative even if pay is not ideal
Agencies and client don’t want to pay us to be creative.
A lot of people come into advertising wanting to be “creative” and then feel crushed by constant tweaks and approvals. It might help to reframe creativity as solving problems within constraints, but if it’s starting to feel genuinely traumatic, that’s a sign to reassess your role or environment.
so true!
Probably at the wrong agency. Shop around
The ship that’s sailed by creative insights rather than exclusively by client whims, meaningless KPIs, and AI.
FWIW I’ve met a lot of ppl in strategy roles who were originally creatives and left the dept for that reason. Mental health is def much better not being a creative. I feel for you guys. There’s a lot of getting jerked around since it’s so subjective.
It’s commercial work, intended to sell more widgets. Is what it is. Find clients that want to sell widgets in the way you believe is best/creative enough for you. Fix the problem.
yeah but that went away once i stopped anchoring my creativity to my day job/agency. Try finding an agency that consistently makes things you want to make (which can be rare) or save and pour that creativity into side projects! Clients want what they want, make what you want for yourself.
That's not being creative. That's being prescriptive, and that is exactly why you don't like it.
I encourage you to find a passion project outside of work to keep that creative spark and stay inspired.
“Freelance” being the key word here ☝🏼. Deciding what work you take on and with what expectations is a good way to govern the creativity dilemma.
