I spent $600 on a pair of yellow gold bands for the two of us and I bought her a house she could rent out. The yellow gold reminds us that we are special and different and are connected to traditions of the past.
My wife and I both have high-paying jobs and no debt, so affording a big diamond would not be a problem. However, when it was time I ended up buying a Forever One moissanite ring (2.5 diamond carat equivalent, solitaire). Yes, we discussed in advance. I paid just under $2k and we think it was a much better decision and are both very happy.
We also went with moissanite... 0.75ct equivalent in recycled platinum. I am the wife and told my now-husband that I wanted something not a diamond, lab stone (rather than mined) and nicer than a ring pop, heavily hinted at moissanite since its a bit harder than cz or white sapphire.
I take my rings off a lot (working out/lifting weights, washing hands) and work in healthcare; if i was doing anything in an office or surg suite for ops obs I had to scrub/glove up and rings are no bueno. I also lost my mom's engagement ring as a toddler when she let me play with it. So generally I did not want anything worth more than 1-2k sitting on my finger.
I rarely wear my engagement ring anymore and my wedding band was $30 on amazon. We gross 300k/yr income and have little debt; we love each other and just have bud light tastes on a champagne budget lol

Why is everyone on her assuming OP is purchasing an engagement ring and making recommendations based on that assumption?

SA1 right, but like... what if OP is a badass woman who is buying herself something nice because she wants to? How is it different than, say, someone buying a boat, or other luxury item?
Husband spent ~25k for 2.5ct solitaire

Nope! Was $6k or so and thats moreeee than necessary. I have seen lots and lots of posts/comments about rings in the $20-40k range so someone is doing it out there...
10k engagement, 5k wedding to complete the set.
Wow this thread is next level. I have my grandmother’s engagement ring that she gave me (my husband proposed with it) and a $20 wedding band we bought at a market for our City Hall wedding. We saved our money to have a baby and move to the West Coast. When we’re ready we’ll get ‘proper’ wedding bands but nothing extreme

Nope.
I paid 37k. Currently engaged. It’s not a big deal over the long term. Financed over two years with no interest. Obviously it’s not my preference to spend that much. Because I got engaged later in life (34), I have resources to do stuff like that.
It was important to her. She has a more successful career than me, and as we talked about her ideal ring, she suggested she’d chip in to get the one she wanted. I’m too proud to let that happen. The compromise is that she isn’t asking me to contribute so much to the wedding. Six months into the engagement, she still complements it every day
