I spent $600 on a pair of yellow gold bands for the two of us and I bought her a house she could rent out. The yellow gold reminds us that we are special and different and are connected to traditions of the past.
My wife and I both have high-paying jobs and no debt, so affording a big diamond would not be a problem. However, when it was time I ended up buying a Forever One moissanite ring (2.5 diamond carat equivalent, solitaire). Yes, we discussed in advance. I paid just under $2k and we think it was a much better decision and are both very happy.
We also went with moissanite... 0.75ct equivalent in recycled platinum. I am the wife and told my now-husband that I wanted something not a diamond, lab stone (rather than mined) and nicer than a ring pop, heavily hinted at moissanite since its a bit harder than cz or white sapphire.
I take my rings off a lot (working out/lifting weights, washing hands) and work in healthcare; if i was doing anything in an office or surg suite for ops obs I had to scrub/glove up and rings are no bueno. I also lost my mom's engagement ring as a toddler when she let me play with it. So generally I did not want anything worth more than 1-2k sitting on my finger.
I rarely wear my engagement ring anymore and my wedding band was $30 on amazon. We gross 300k/yr income and have little debt; we love each other and just have bud light tastes on a champagne budget lol

$6K when we got married, $50K for our 25th anniversary.

Sorry, last one disappeared for some reason.

Be careful with these posts, I got reported for commenting on a girls post who spent 80k on her ring and said “who spends 80k on a diamond ring, are you Beyoncé” ..thought I was funny! She didn’t, I was kicked off FB for 4 days 🤣

My bad- it was actually 35% of a Tiffany ring so 28k appraisal. People can spend whatever they want on rings, but in my opinion it’s a bit of a sucker move to spend tens of thousands on something that depreciates this much.

It’s dumb. Buy a house. Pay off debt. Save for your future together or the wedding.
You really want to spend that much? I believe she will love it no matter how much you spend. I spent 6k and I felt uncomfortable with that. Just spend what you can afford without going into debt.
God he must’ve spent a sh*t ton bc rings fetch nothing on the secondary market, the diamond must’ve been huge AF
Do yourself a favor and get a lab made diamond. You can get a beautiful 2 carat round with great color for between 7-10k. Throw on a platinum band for 2k and you’re looking at 12k max for a beautiful rock.
Oh hell no.
Well since it’s a marketing scam created 100 years ago go as low as you possibly can since the depreciation is worse than a new car

PSA.
10k buys a gorgeous ring now a days, do not buy the diamond from a jeweler, find a diamond broker
New York is the best place to find a broker, most will work with you with pictures over email.... and yes, you show up to a jeweler with the diamond to get it set

People do this???? That’s the start of a downpayment on a house wtf

My So got me a 2 c center stone with halo of diamonds around it. I think he paid around 20k and it appraised for about 35k a few years later. I love my ring and wear it everyday. I would have loved him and married him no matter the ring. It was very affordable for us (married in our 40’s) and I will give it to our kids when I pass. I have enjoyed it very much and I think it is about what is comfortably affordable for you

JC folks.... 20k? That’s insane.... a 0.5 carat ring I think is around 3k? Why would you need to spend more than that? And can you really walk around with a 20k ring? That’s outright dangerous

$5,600 in 2005. I still remeber because I couldn't believe how much I was dropping on a piece of rock and some metal. Y'all are making me feel better

My partner spent 15k (GBP) on a ring. I made her take it back.

Very nice! It’s a lot of money to spend on anything. Surprising that she would spend so much on it as a gift for you, when it appears you’re not the kind to relish it.

Sa1. EY1 is in shock. That sharp diamond cut the poor bastard bad. Let us pray

Spend no more than $6K-8K on the ring and get your SO an upgrade after 10 years for $20K.
Diamond have very low resale value. ATLEAST, my SO would be more happy if I saved that and invested in a CD or a high yield savings account.
Literally the first time in a decade I’ve heard someone unironically mention a CD
I haven’t yet but it’s coming.
Going to be at least 40.
Welp 😫

I think it’s nice to get an expensive ring since cost is not an object here, although it would be nicer if it was not due to external pressure. If my spouse had 5 or 6 cars, one ring the price of a car wouldn’t be a set back 😀
