His name is Kash!
Oh my gosh love him. He’s so gorgeous
I would say get whatever pet insurance you want to get ASAP because when we adopted our dog at the age of 6 they determined his bad knees where considered a preexisting condition and we had to pay everything out of pocket. We cancelled the policy after that
I use Nationwide's full coverage plan which includes wellness. It's about $60/month to cover my dog. I think it's great because everything is covered, even flea and tick medicine. Highly suggest signing up ASAP to get ahead of pre-existing conditions. My dog eats literally everything she can so I'd rather have piece of mind just in case she needs an emergency vet visit!
My cats have better insurance than I do. Breaks even with biannual dental cleanings. Dental is expensive.
Agree - get it ASAP. I have Healthy Paws and it’s been a life saver. My rescue pup ended up having issues that required a little over $8k for tests the first year alone and the policy was a lifesaver - reimbursement level at 80% and I believe the deductible was $250 or $300ish. My monthly payment at that time was $30ish. I’m right under $40 right now.
2nd Healthy Paws. Especially with a purebred dog, get insurance ASAP before any weird conditions start popping up
We did the pet insurance thing. Thought it was a waste, cancelled, then lil man needed surgical removal of mast cell tumors. We paid out of pocket but that insurance would have been nice. I'd say get insurance (we had nationwide, no real complaints) OR have an emergency fund dedicated to your pet (5-10k). Chances of them needing costly treatment are hopefully slim, but when the need arises, it's nice not to think about the $$$.
Get it 100%. I was paying $55per month for my two cats. When my stupid ass ex brought lilies, they were immediately throwing up etc. the total bill for both of them was over $8000 for three days of treatment and hospitalization. but out of pocket was only $200. I always thought I was wasting money by keeping the insurance, but I got my huge bang for the buck!!
@ everyone - should I get a plan that covers Wellness Visits?
After your first year I would recommend seeing what you're able to use from your wellness care. I like Nationwide because there's no specific limit for wellness and I can use it in any category. I think most other plans have limits for wellness. Dental cleanings can be pretty expensive (for my cat it's $400 each time) and so I wanted to make sure that was covered.
Also thank you for your advice and kind words!
I have healthy paws and we’ve had a good experience - really easy claims process and everything has been approved. Get it ASAP though - you don’t know what little thing could turn into a big expense down the road, and you don’t want it excluded. For example, we had my dog treated for itchiness several times... now she gets semi regular allergy shots that are $200+ after the appointment.
You want can’t imagine how quickly an animal can do damage to themselves. My 7 month old cat ate a string and it cost $4000. I bought insurance the next week. Don’t be me.
So since my dog is very young rather than pet insurance I decided on getting preventative care. I pay $35 a month with the Banfield PetSmart Hospitals can be used all over the US and includes 2 physicals a year all vaccines and spay/neuter. Also you get 10% off medications should your dog need it. Since my I got a very healthy bread and he’s very young I don’t feel the need to over pay for insurance I will likely not use. However as he ages I will definitely be switching to insurance. As I know things will happen down the line.
^ this and dogs eat stupid shit all the time. Also life happens and they get sick for no reason. If you don’t have insurance before life happens then you’re basically shit out of luck.
