I got an email from a recruiter from PayPal about a position I didn’t apply for. How do I know that? Because on workday you can see all the jobs I applied for. I applied for one position in the company but got reply for another position I am not interested in. The recruiter wants to set up a phone interview? How would you react? Because I would love working there, but not in this position,
Would you say something during the phone call or before?

Let’s answer the question directly so there’s some
Objective comparison. I’ll start. I get 2-3/month on average.. though some months are much heavier than others. Like last month was 5-6 but December was 0. I’m an AP.
Frequency increased drastically after I hit 1+0 (went from maybe once a month to once a week) and the quality of offers increased as well.
Yes
Maybe because you are only at bcg for 4 months while your peers are there for 30 months.
Yea that’s definitely a factor, but I really came to consulting to add some brand value and don’t plan to stay past 1 year or two.
To be honest, although I receive tonnes of in mail, only 2-3% of them are actually quality ones. I am currently interviewing at 2 FANNG companies and I got those interviews by applying online, not through recruiter/referrals
And by 3 YOE do you mean post-MBA (considering your title is associate and not SBA)? How does YOE work here on FishBowl lol, when I say I have 3YOE it’s post-college. If you’re post-MBA your YOE should include all those years before and maybe including MBA as well?
I think you’re expecting too much. Increase in recruiter interest / brand recognition actually comes from having worked at BCG, not from having mastered a case interview there. By looking for another job without having any meaningful work experience there, you’re actually sending me a negative signal, in that you’re not actually wanting and willing to learn the skills/ project based work/ long hours/ content (whatever the brand/ work experience is a proxy for). For that reason, and by experience, I’ve seen inbounds go up after ~1.5y (where you have some of the toolkit), and peaking after ~5y (where you have meaningful project Mgmt experience).
Also it looks like you are not part of the traditional track. Recruiters generally know who is part of the traditional track, and that’s likely driving some of the activity.
Waaait are we talking consulting or support staff here, that completely changes the paradigm of the question :-D
Did you mark yourself as ‘open to work’ on LinkedIn?
Yes I did. “Actively looking”, although in role types I put “strategy/operations/product/marketing manager”. I’m analyst-level at BCG and also analyst in my previous industry strategy role. I’m looking for manager level at later-stage (series B and above) startups though, and seems like lots of MBB/IB folks with 2-3 YOE exit to manager level at those types of startups. I did get recruiter inmails for senior analyst roles at unicorn startups, but I don’t want to jump ship to be a senior analyst, might as well stay at BCG longer.
Yeah same here. I lateraled to Bain and have since then left them and not many InMails now. Probably more when I was at Bain.
Oh I see. In that case, while you were at Bain, did you get any recruiter emails for strategy&operations type of roles (I.e.roles more geared towards the traditional consulting staff)? Was your title different from the typical “associate consultant” at Bain? Asking because I’m also in a specialized role at BCG and my title is not the typical “associate”, but “analyst”. I wonder if that makes a difference.
They spam you after each CDC :-)

About 1 high quality contact a month

15 YOE, former MBB. Overwhelming majority is spam or completely off-level. Maybe one good lead a month.
No open to work, average once a week
My hits went up dramatically at 6 months. It was like a switch flipped. Hang on and be a little more patient.
I’m surprise why a thread on such a simple topic gets this much attention… more valuable questions in the bowls to answer guys…
