How much do you weight maternity leave as a benefit in a job offer? Would you take a smaller pay raise for switching jobs in order to receive longer mat leave? (As a woman who has not yet had children but planning to in next year or two)

Personally, it's not something I would actually need (as I'm on the verge of menopause), but I wouldn't ignore it either -- the length of the maternity leave would be informative regarding the company culture (e.g., how they treat employees in general, & female employees in particular)

I agree it’s a good indicator of how they think about working moms

It’s a big deal to me as someone who had a baby last year. I took off 7 months and it was amazing. Also— depending on your childcare plans, taking more maternity leave means you don’t need childcare during that period which might actually save you more money than whatever the other raise would be.

If you are planning on having a baby soon I would see the mat leave as a very important benefit. I used it this year, my company offers 6-8 weeks as disability (short term) and then 10 weeks paid + you could take 6 more to bond with no pay. All of that is extremely important for someone recovering from birth and surviving the first 3 months which are insanely hard for most.

like

A good maternity leave is really important. For my first baby, I only had 13 weeks and that wasn’t enough time. For my second baby, I was at a Big 4 and got 7 months leave. That was perfect. So, yes, I’d take a lower raise for a better maternity leave during the baby years. Then, if a raise was really substantial elsewhere, I’d consider it when I was done having kids.

like

That's a huge benefit if you're planning to use it. You can quantify the money part of having a longer leave (your pay for those weeks plus not paying for childcare those weeks), but then also add in the qualitative factor of more time with your baby and more time to recover. The higher paying job would have to be significantly higher to give that up.

like

Huge benefit I highly factored in. I switched from a company with 9 weeks (which is great still) to my current role that has 26 weeks over a year ago. Planning to have a baby soon and not even considering leaving bc of the amazing benefit. By comparison my friend is expecting and found out her company policy is 6 weeks

like

Depends on how big a difference in the benefits.

If you plan on kids, then heck yeah.
