Depending on which industry you are in as well as how established the company that hired you. There are may purely design firms but most of this companies started outsourcing 3D and 2D output from third world countries where they establish branches there.
Smaller companies usually hire engineers who can do multiple roles on their projects, from proposal stages to design up until commissioning / production.
More established companies hire engineers but assign them on more specific tasks. Depending on which area/department you are assigned to/applied to, that will be your role and might have less chance to do actual design tasks.
Same here, it's more helping the outsourcing company that knows CAD.
Hardly ever and I really wish it was more a part of my day-to-day. Not sure how I would push my career into that direction though. Would love to hear from someone who does use CAD almost everyday and hear what your role is!

As management, not much haha but when I was a designer, every day
Spent 8 years in Engineering Design (Power Generation). Its was fun, until it felt like what I was doing was a routine job and that its now all about new software knowledge and no "actual" designing as you're just improving or reproducing old designs. Changed career to manufacturing engineer wherein aside from running projects, I get to design fixtures and equipment as well as developed new products. Now took a step back and I'm now assembling and inspecting those products that I used to develop.
I do a little bit as a design engineer in the power space, but it’s a small fraction of my job. I really enjoyed it in college as well.

I get to deal with it all the time thankfully. I love it.
