Flippant answer: getting a PE ops offer is awesome. Take it.
Reality: how is the fund doing? Have they raised a fund or are the raising a fund? Are they doing lots of continuation vehicles or are clearly struggling with several portcos.
For your role, is ops a valued partner to the deal team or seen as operations. Is ops a growing function at the fund? Gives you a window in to what the visibility you will have and your career runway at the fund.
Being at MBB, especially BCG PIPE or a specialist firm like A&M pepi help.
There is a ton of need for value creation and transformation at portcos- being EM level with PE case experience and solid PM skills, too. Also demonstrating soft skills, getting buy in etc with exec level and fund level clients.
Network with BCG alum that are at portcos and at funds. They have a lot of say in who gets hired. Your their guy at the portco. Talk to recruiters like Charles Aris, and others that do PE. MM PE is a good place to start as everyone wants the MF portco work.
So it’s not a portfolio ops job then
