Bain & Company I’m from Italy and will start my master’s degree at Oxbridge this fall. I got my undergrad from a target uni in continental Europe. I want to start my career in consulting, possibly MBB, in London. I know consulting firms tend to hire locally but I’d really like to work in London and that’s also one of the main reasons why I went for the Oxbridge degree. I also went consulting -> PE -> startup world. Long story short, if you know for sure that you want to be in a startup, just go to a startup. I enjoyed investing and would go to VC / growth, but the skillsets are truly different. Maybe the one thing that PE added was that startups are happy to have me in finance leadership roles / get involved in fundraising, but I'd say I draw on my consulting skillset about two-thirds of the time.
Without knowing more about you, PE could:
- allow you to specialize in a space more. E.g., going to a software fund like Insight, TA, Clearlake, etc (some of these like Insight do growth, late stage VC in addition to buyout which would be relevant)
- deal / investment experience will carry over to fundraising / understanding the investor mindset
- round out business knowledge
- potentially build stronger network and meet and work with cool companies / leaders in a closer capacity vs. being an advisor
