Gold gives some benefit but silver is useless
Silver is useless. Gold is useful (star alliance lounge access, free economy plus seating at time of booking, group 1 boarding)
Thanks! Been trying to figure out if I should optimize for PQPs by flying Swiss Business class or take Emirates for the experience. This is a transatlantic flight, so wanted to make the most use of it.
I found silver useful as I fly a lot domestically. I like the extra inches in an economy plus seat which you can usually get at check-in. The group 2 boarding also almost assures room for your carry-on. And the free check bag can save a lot of money if you tend to check a bag.
Double check earning with partners. In my experience it’s been basically nothing. Have flown business class on some partners and earned less pqp than some domestic flights. For instance I have to go to Turkey and I think it caps out at 2k pqp round trip
The Polaris hard product is equivalent or better than that of European airlines but the Polaris soft product is maybe 35% as good.
As an example - I’ve struggled to get a water having to use flight attendant call button. Partner airlines are constantly checking on you. And food and beverage aren’t comparable - Polaris a step above economy but not particularly good. I’ve had great meals on competing airlines.
Really the main thing is I walk off United flights unhappy more often than not, and delighted on partner airlines more often than not.
If you can swing it with a status challenge, that would be best case scenario
Gold status allows me to receive upgrades on empty flights when I fly from smaller hubs.
