Show them the price of the ticket. Include moving/storage costs. Get an attorney to negotiate on your behalf. Good luck. You can also get a tourist visa and stay here for six months if you want to look for other jobs.
Don’t firms have a policy of severance package proportionate to your tenure at the firm or similar? I don’t think you have any leverage here unfortunately

Yes, my firm gave me a severance package. The flight ticket is a separate payment. Current cost of the flight is more than $1500, i was expecting they would pay something close to that amount.
Mine does. I was a campus hire on OPT and needed sponsorship down the road. In my employment agreement there was a clause stating if my employment were to be terminated due to immigration related reason, the firm will pay one way ticket to home country
The employer is legally bound to give u a return ticket, tell them the ticket price and ask them to book for you.
Though you need to be careful as lawfully you can only take that amount if you are really going back to home country
