Also remember that you’re potentially trading down from a 2B2B to a studio, and city + state taxes
Yikes, I might’ve overlooked a lot
I would love to relocate but my gf is a director of a nonprofit in our city, so I am stuck 😆
Maybe they can open a new branch
The magnitude of the cost of living adjustment matters. I doubt it will be enough to keep a similar life style. Aside from the weather
My salary would go from 175 to 245 so it’s a generous 40% before taxes though…
Does the 40k include the cost of living adjustment? What city do you live in now? (if it’s not Miami you’re going to have severe sticker shock). By NY I assume you mean NYC? If so this doesn’t at all seem enough $ to be worth, sounds like a lateral move
1. Florida has no state tax. Consider you’re going to be paying hefty taxes in NY including state and city tax
2. Research apartments - my guess is you’re going to be paying A LOT more for significantly less. It’s been awhile since I lived there but I’d guess $3k+ for a no frills 1bed, $5-6k if you want to live in a luxury apt building
If you’re not 100% in love with the idea already I think you’re going to hate it
Thanks for your insights though!
Probably compare city to city as opposed to entire states. You will need significant raise and then some to compensate for cost of living in Manhattan compared to any city in Florida. And you may not live in NYC at all, as plenty of people who live in NYC, live in NJ. But maybe not so much at buffalo , NY. See how much you are spending now and how much you will spending at a new city to maintain the same lifestyle.
Good tool here, might not be 100% accurate but will give you an idea- https://www.nerdwallet.com/cost-of-living-calculator/compare/miami-dade-county-fl-vs-new-york-queens-ny
Hmmm that sounds awful
Do it. Yolo. If it doesn’t work out, move back.
Overall you will make less and compromise more. Unless it’s a personal move, it won’t be the best decision financially.
