I would just say that you are looking for opportunity to grow within the company and you’re wondering what other roles may be available to you. Def stress that you wanna stay at the company.
Coach
I have really enjoyed working here for the last year and want to continue developing with the firm. Given my prior experience, I have a good grasp on this role and want to find ways to expand my current role. I have some goals in mind but understand you may need some time to think more about projects or tasks I could support. Can we set up some time next week discuss what that may look like?
I would expect your manager to need some time to think this through so plan to schedule some additional time with them in a week. In the off chance the don’t, be prepared to say what you want to be more involved with and how they can develop you more. You don’t ask, you don’t get.
Frame it as growth and opportunity you’re looking for.
Mentor
I can relate except there’s no place to move in a small company. Other comments are good which I could use myself.
Do you have an idea of what kinds of projects you want to work on? Or what would be less boring? I think the underlying question is whether or not there is room in your role to do different things in your current role…or if they’ll let you do something else. (After a year, not sure?)
I usually recommend the book Designing Your Life, but the authors also have a newer book, Designing Your New Work Life. Here’s an article from the authors - https://www.fastcompany.com/90473717/how-to-give-yourself-a-better-job-when-quitting-feels-like-your-only-option-and-you-cant-quit
