Get on a project that'll let you or be OK waiting another year.
Find a project that has a big team with some BAs that u can manage.
It's up or out in S&O
Am pretty sure that managing resources has always been a requirement to be promoted to Manager. At least in S&O. And S&O MBA hire has also always been 2 years up and out. They've relaxed this in the past when we were super busy but am not sure if that will be the case now. I would definitely look to get staged on a project in a manager role ASAP. Did you get a 3 last year? You also need to be on track for a 2 this year bc S&O SCs who go 3,3 are also on the chopping block even if they have manager experience.
There is a lot of inaccurate information here. MBA hires have always had 2 years to show they're ready to be a Manager. If they're not, it's up or out. No exceptions are given (unless there's been a LoA or something drastic). More importantly, you got that feedback so you'd have time to address it and be well positioned for year end. If your response is to go to another firm and not get it done you probably should look elsewhere.
Wow.... really interesting perspectives. My argument was precisely that I have managed client resources. I never did get a chance to manage internal resources on my projects. Ultimately, I think it is a subjective decision taken by your project manager whether one is ready or not. Thanks guys!
@OP, they'll let some 3rd year SCs stick around if their network is strong.
2 years for MBA hires, 3 for DHC promotes
DHC? Direct experienced hire?
Yup... that's the plan. Thanks for all your inputs.
This is all BS. Managing resources is subjective. I'd give value to managing client resources over internal since BA and Cs will do what you ask and you can tear it to shreds if it's not acceptable. Try and motivate a 9-5er from the client or even worse, contractors. bottom line is how you craft your story and whether or not your counselor can sell it. Leading client resources and developing relationships for me trumps bossing BAs around any day of the week. Fuck the TEF, grow a pair and master your own destiny.
It's also all BS because it seems to depend on how we are doing in a given year. That and a kiss-ass politics culture
We only get 2 years at the SC level?
Experienced hires, masters student hires, etc. pretty much anyone not MBA hires
Interesting- great to know, thanks!
Not true at all... I didn't want to promote to M because I was too young. I stuck around SC in S&O for 4 after grad school...
D3- that's really good advice
This was never a requirement until they needed to have reasons for layoffs. Gearing up for another round?
Wow, thanks, D5!
Sorry to read that OP had no idea about expectations. I think I've always had expectations clearly set that one needs to live the role prior to getting promoted. This means managing someone in the case of SC --> M
