I am a 4th-year associate in a midsize firm's litigation team, focusing on insurance defense. I manage cases from pre-suit to trial, often working long hours, including weekends. I want to transition to a big law for better salary and opportunities. As a first-generation attorney who moved to the U.S. for law school and has no immediate family here, I would appreciate any tips for making this lateral move as I'm struggling to navigate my career in a country I didn't grow up in.

Certain V80+ firms have big ID practices for example Cozen. I heard they’re always hiring

You may need to lateral out of Insurance Defense first. Most biglaw firms don’t hire ID associates as a rule. I get the desire (you’re already working those hours so why not do it for good pay?) but most firms don’t view ID experience as marketable unfortunately.

I started in ID. Did 1 year then transitioned to a smaller firm doing comm lit for 2 years. Then lateraled to a big law firm in my 4th year.

Grades also matter significantly regardless of years in practice to Big Law. If you’re below median at your school, especially outside the T14, it will be a long shot. I’d network hard.

I currently work at an international law firm (4 years) and recently accepted an offer to go in house. The main attorney I support did not take the news well and was very angry with me. I feel awful and beaten down as I don’t want to upset anyone but the new role is fully remote and a nice pay bump. Looking for words of encouragement that I did the right thing. I feel awful 😞

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.
